Restaking and EigenLayer: Extending Ethereum's Trust Layer.

The Restaking Concept

When you stake ETH, you're providing economic security โ€” validators have skin in the game and can be slashed for misbehavior. EigenLayer's breakthrough: what if that same staked ETH could secure multiple networks simultaneously? Restakers opt in to additional slashing conditions in exchange for additional rewards from services called Actively Validated Services (AVSes).

Why It Matters

Every new crypto network needs to bootstrap its own trust โ€” either through its own staking mechanism (expensive, slow) or by renting trust from an established chain (limited). EigenLayer creates a marketplace where projects can rent Ethereum's $70B+ security budget on day one. This is a structural advantage that could define network formation for a generation.

The AVS Ecosystem

AVSes are services that rent Ethereum security through EigenLayer. Categories include: oracle networks (requiring honest data delivery), bridges (requiring honest relay of cross-chain messages), rollup sequencers (requiring honest transaction ordering), and data availability layers (requiring honest data storage). EigenDA โ€” EigenLayer's own DA layer โ€” was the first AVS.

Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs)

Rather than restaking directly through EigenLayer, most users accessed the protocol through LRT protocols: Ether.fi (eETH/weETH), Renzo (ezETH), Kelp DAO (rsETH), and Puffer Finance. These LRTs became DeFi's hottest collateral in early 2024, flowing through Pendle for yield trading, Aave for borrowing, and across dozens of DeFi protocols.

The Points Wars and Airdrop Meta

EigenLayer's delayed token launch created the "points" meta โ€” protocols awarding non-transferable points redeemable for future airdrops. This spawned a sophisticated ecosystem of points aggregators, restaked points multipliers, and yield-optimized LRT strategies that defined DeFi in H1 2024.

Risk Assessment

Cascading slashing remains the primary systemic risk: if an AVS misbehaves and triggers slashing, correlated exposure across LRTs could create liquidity crises. The restaking risk pyramid requires understanding: single-point AVS risk, correlated slashing risk, and LRT smart contract risk.
