The Bitcoin DeFi Opportunity
Bitcoin holds over $1 trillion in value โ nearly all of it sitting idle. Bitcoin doesn't have native smart contracts. Its holders either sit in cold storage or move BTC to Ethereum (wBTC) to access DeFi, trusting centralized custodians. Stacks offers a third path: bring DeFi to Bitcoin, on Bitcoin's security.
How Stacks Works
Stacks is a Layer 1 blockchain that settles transactions to Bitcoin via its Proof of Transfer (PoX) consensus. Miners spend BTC to win STX block rewards โ creating a direct economic link between Bitcoin and Stacks. Bitcoin miners validate Stacks' transaction history, inheriting Bitcoin's security without requiring any Bitcoin protocol changes.
The Nakamoto Upgrade
Stacks' Nakamoto upgrade was the most significant in its history: (1) Bitcoin miner influence over Stacks blocks was removed, enabling true Bitcoin-secured finality in under 5 seconds. (2) The mining mechanism was restructured for higher efficiency. (3) sBTC's launch was enabled by Nakamoto's improved finality guarantees.
sBTC: Bitcoin in DeFi
sBTC is a decentralized, 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset secured by a threshold signature scheme involving 150+ independent signers. Unlike wBTC (controlled by BitGo) or cbBTC (controlled by Coinbase), sBTC has no single custodial entity. BTC holders can mint sBTC and use it in Stacks DeFi without trusting a centralized bridge.
The Bitcoin DeFi Ecosystem
ALEX Protocol: The leading Stacks DEX. Arkadiko: Stablecoin protocol using STX collateral. Gamma: NFT marketplace. Zest Protocol: BTC lending. The ecosystem is nascent but growing rapidly, with sBTC's launch expected to dramatically accelerate DeFi TVL.
Investment Thesis
STX captures value from two sources: (1) protocol activity (DeFi fees, NFT royalties) and (2) the Bitcoin price correlation (miners spend BTC to earn STX, creating a natural price floor tied to Bitcoin). If Bitcoin DeFi captures even 1% of BTC market cap as TVL, the Stacks ecosystem becomes one of DeFi's largest.
