Onchain Gaming.
Games and gaming distribution layers where assets, progression or economies settle onchain.
Onchain gaming covers games and game-distribution layers where assets, progression or the economy itself settle on a blockchain rather than a publisher's private database. The thesis is ownership: items and currencies a player holds in a wallet can be traded, lent or carried between titles, and the studio cannot unilaterally delete them.
The category has been through a full hype cycle. The 2021 play-to-earn wave proved that token rewards attract users quickly and lose them just as quickly once emissions slow, because the reward, not the game, was the product. The current generation inverts that โ build a game people play, then settle the parts that benefit from real ownership onchain, and keep the rest off it.
What to watch: daily active wallets versus daily active players (they diverge sharply when farming dominates), whether token emissions exceed in-game demand, and how much of the economy actually touches the chain. Infrastructure plays โ chains, distribution platforms and studios shipping multiple titles โ carry less single-title risk than any one game.
