Perp DEXs & On-Chain Trading.
On-chain perpetuals and spot exchanges taking share from centralised venues.
Perpetual DEXs and onchain orderbooks are attempting the hardest substitution in crypto: taking derivatives and spot volume away from centralised exchanges. Perpetuals are the largest volume pool in the market, and the venues capturing that flow onchain generate genuine, measurable fee revenue rather than speculative narrative.
The reason it is hard is performance and liquidity. Traders need tight spreads, deep books, low latency and reliable liquidation engines under stress โ exactly what centralised matching does well. Recent designs win by specialising: purpose-built chains or appchains, off-chain matching with onchain settlement, and market-maker incentives to seed depth.
The honest metrics are fee revenue, open interest and depth at size, not headline volume, which is easily inflated by incentive farming and self-trading. Also examine the liquidation and insurance mechanism, because these venues are stress-tested precisely when volatility spikes, and a failure there is existential rather than cosmetic.
